birds of a feather tween party

Posted by dasfseegdse 0 komentar
my oldest daughter olivia just turned 12.
AND, she is almost as tall as me...where in the WORLD does the time go?
*sigh...
in our family, we alternate "friend" birthday parties and "family" birthday parties.
since we only have a "big" party every other year, i like to make it really special.
when olivia turned 10, we had a "safari pool party" and invited over 20 girls. it
was a fun party, but making 20+ party favors and 20+ invitations was a little
overwhelming. this year, she opted to invite only her 6 best friends.
olivia is an animal lover through and through, and wanted the "theme" to
have something to do with animals...i searched and searched for inspiration...
i wanted something with an interesting color theme, and that was just
a little grown up and suitable for tweens. i was shopping at michaels when i spotted
the perfect inspiration in the wedding section! for those of you that don't know, most
craft stores carry a beautiful assortment of printable wedding invitations.
i knew with a few minor additions, these invites would be perfect for her party.

the inside of the envelope was pretty plain, so i lined them with metallic patterned paper.
i also added the "flight itinerary"card.
we decided to have the entire party "out", which is perfect for a group of young ladies.

since i only had 6 girls (versus 20+) AND i didn't have any food or decorations to
worry about, i really went all out on the party favors.
each girl got a wooden box filled with goodies.
(the boxes were also found at michaels.)
as each girl came to the car, we gave them a cute flower to wear in their hair.
i made the flowers with a floral garland that i  found at walmart and some barrettes and felt
picked up at a craft store.
 each girl received:
a monogrammed bookmark (made from scrapbook paper and a letter cut with my cricut)
a stretchable mood ring
some m+m's and chocolate covered sunflower seeds in a hinged tin.
(found in the wedding section at michaels craft store)
blue nail polish,
some vanilla body spray
a homemade hair clip
and some chocolate!
for just a couple dollars more than it would have cost to buy paper bags, i was able to get these wooden boxes. i think they give a very "grown up" feel and will be something that each girl can use
 for years to come.

my daughter wrote each one of her friends a poem and a note and attached it to the inside of the box.
these notes were the "response cards" that came with the wedding invitations.

a quick look at the cake...i am NOT good at making birthday cakes, so this
is something that i usually have a bakery do. i have also ordered plain cakes from
grocery stores and add somthing to dress them up. i did that here and here.
when ordering from a bakery, i always come armed with color swatches,
some sketches of what i want and a print out of the font that i want matched for the writing.
yeah, i'm a little crazy when it comes to things coordinating for a party...
party was a success and the party favors were a big hit!
the girls all had a great  time, and so did my birthday girl.
i love you olivia!
happy 12th.

a little upholstery trick

Posted by dasfseegdse 0 komentar
last week, i recovered a chair with a napkin, and mentioned that i had used a little *trickery!
well, lucky, lucky you that i took "upholstery 101" not ONCE but TWICE when i was in college!
yes, i loved it so much that i took it twice....and was able to reupholster 3 chairs. those chairs have been slowly replaced through the years, but my upholstery knowledge has stayed with me.
one trick that i learned can come in handy when you are trying to preserve expensive "face"fabric, or,
in my case, when the fabric you want to use is just a little bit too short. it's a very simple process---just sewstrips of  a secondary fabric onto the face fabric...it's best if this fabric is a similar color to your face fabric.

the extra width will allow you to pull and staple the fabric around the backside of the piece you are working on.
super, duper easy.
here are a few pictures of how this looks on my chair:
this is the front of the seat...

this is the back of the seat, so the seam doesn't show at all.
i hope you enjoyed gleaning my "upholstery 101" knowledge from me!
have a terrific night, y'all!

you may notice a few changes around here.
i have been working on this makeover for
a long time, and i am happy that it is finally
"under construction".
please pardon the dust (again) until
the installation is complete, which
may take the rest of today and into tomorrow.
what do you think so far??

real house, real style: shelli

Posted by dasfseegdse Jumat, 06 Mei 2011 0 komentar
i am the first to admit that curling up on the couch with a stack
of home  decor magazines is one of life's perfect pleasures.
however, there are many times when i can get a little...intimidated.
a $45,000 rug? a 1.2 million renovation? an urn that costs more than my car?
i have nothing against super high-end design...but let's face it, most of us
have budgets that are far tighter, and will never own a couch that
costs more than a college education.
i am a firm believer in mixing high and low,
and making your house feel good for YOU. i always get asked questions like...
"but do you really think that "A" will go with "B"?
or..."if i put "A" on the wall, will it clash too much with the "B" in the other room?
almost all of the time i tell people that the more they mix things up and add
personal items in their home that tell a story about THEM, the more interesting,
unique, and beautiful their home will be.
***
i was thrilled when i saw pictures of shelli's house. her house is warm and
inviting, but also has perfect little pops of personality.
there is a great balance of traditional, graphic and textural items that
create a sense of interest and comfort.
and how FANTASTIC is that striped couch?
i love how the large, graphic posters take advantage of those high ceilings!
angled fireplaces can pose a lot of design issues in a room, but i love that shelli created a
symmterucal, comfortable seating area that in a way "ignores" the fireplace.
well done.
 aren't her pictures great?

i am dying over this office!
shelli painted the walls a soft pink, and brought in plenty of texture
and neutrals to keep it form feeling too girly.
the turquoise, blue and green accents are the perfect balance to the pink.
the eames soft pad management chair is a favorite of mine...
real or "faux", i love them all.

shelli made this gorgeous bolster pillow from a table runner!
blue and green are not commonly used in nursery's for baby girls,
but shelli brilliantly managed to keep the vibe light and playful and feminine.
ahhhh.
perfect.
in the breakfast room, the chevron love seat  "plays" so nicely with the slip covered
parsons chairs and traditional wood chairs. it's still traditional, but kicked up a notch.
love it.
thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us shelli!
