a visit to west elm

Posted by dasfseegdse Kamis, 29 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
earlier this week, i popped in west elm for a visit.
this west elm is located in downtown salt lake city, and is in the new city creek center, across from the historic temple square.
if you have never been to a west elm, you need to make a point to pop in the next time you are in a city that has one!

i love the way they have the most items displayed by color.
such eye candy!

if you have only been shopping on west elm online, you might have missed their new "market" area--where they carry dishes, and all things related to housekeeping. their stuff is seriously chic. i found myself daydreaming about throwing out all of my mixing bowls, canisters, hot pads, and kitchen "gear" and starting from scratch.

i am a huge fan of west elm lighting! their items are so unique and look great in any space. they always manage to stock items that add an edge to a very traditional room, or add some softness to a very modern space.

one item that i am particularly taken with is their version of the "bed in a bag". they come pre-packaged in coordinating sets so you can just grab and go and know your bed will look great.
this pretty maize version comes with the sunburst duvet cover and polka dot sheets, and then you can throw on whatever accent you want.

the patterns are so pretty together!

this chevron is another version of their "bed in a bag". the tiny pin-strip sheets are a great compliment to the bolder chevron duvet cover.

love their accessories!

the center of the store has this fun glass enclosure with a large floating branch....

 isn't this fun?
i love the bleached wood plank ceiling. wouldn't this treatment look amazing in a beach house?

here are the two accent pillows that we purchased for the college dorm room:
(the green velvet pillow  is actually darker and more, well...GREEN in person)

(sorry about the blurry pic!)

thanks for coming along!

college dorm room schemes + design board

Posted by dasfseegdse Rabu, 28 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
a friend of mine recently asked for some help in pulling together some bedding ideas for her daughter, who will be starting college in utah this fall. she mentioned that she was looking at some options at pottery barn teen, and i immediately stopped her and told her she was about to make a terrible mistake. (you can say mean things like that to a friend....i would have said the same thing to a client, but in a more professional and "nice" way!)

hey, nothing wrong with pb teen. i actually love pb teen, but taking an entire bedding ensemble from their collection can look a little juvenile--especially for a college student. their girl bedding tends to be bright, and more "clear" colors, which aren't as sophisticated as more muted tones.

for instance, yellow is a great color, but at full intensity (think big bird), and mixed with a hot pink AND a dose of turquoise, it can get bad.

(imagine mimi from the drew carey show... as a bedroom. yeah, YIKES.)

now, take that same yellow, but add some gray and brown to it, and you get a muted, pretty mustard color that will mix well with dusty blues, deep plum, lavender, and ALL kinds of neutrals. the palette can still be youthful, but in a controlled and sophisticated way.

here are a few color schemes that i came up with using a few of my go-to places for tween/teen/young adult bedding items: urban outfitters, west elm, etsy, and serena and lily.

so, which one did she end up choosing?
she chose the "dusty blue + black/white" option, and we ended up throwing in some green for an additional dose of color:

i am looking forward to seeing it all pulled together! my friend and her daughter flew in yesterday, and we met at west elm to make a few purchases....i will be sharing some pictures of my visit tomorrow, so stay tuned!

interested in working together?
i still have openings for september and october.

new favorite thing: double tension shower rod

Posted by dasfseegdse Selasa, 27 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
ok.
first of all, let me just state that--NO, gradys bathroom has NOT been painted yet.
i have thought about it at least 355 times since june, but i still have not taken the plunge.
this is due, in part, to me trying to spend as much time as possible with the kids before they went back to school (yesterday was the first day!). the other part is just sheer laziness. i just haven't made it a priority!

that being said, i am making p-r-o-g-r-e-s-s.
everything EXCEPT the paint is ready to go.
i shared my new design plan of this bathroom here, and one of the things i decided was that i wanted two separate, decorative shower curtains. i looked online to see if i could find a nice looking, double shower rod, and spotted one at bed bath and beyond.

i was going to order it online, but i decided to swing by my local store instead. luckily, they have one in stock, and so i brought it home and tried it out.

i am in love with this! it was really easy to install---it just went up like a normal tension rod. i actually think it was a tad easier because it was larger, and easier to keep lined up in the same place on both sides.

i placed mine right at the top of the shower tile.

because the decorative panels have grommets tops, i did have to thread them onto the rod before tightening it into place. i put the rings for the curtain liner on after the rod was up.
because my panels are 84" long, i purchased an extra long (84") liner. i purchased this hotel fabric one because i want it to last for a long time, and want the option of washing it.

here it is!
i love that the shower is still totally functional, but the shower liner is hidden. i LOVE being able to see the tile in the shower, and feel that having the opening between the panels helps make the bathroom feel a little bigger.
*oh, and see??---the paint and all the supplies are just sitting patiently on the floor, waiting for me to get started. and i will. someday.

The Steps you Need to Build Your Own Home (a guest post)

The Steps you Need to Build Your Own Home
Your home is the most important place in the world to you, and this is a place in which you will relax, unwind, socialise, eat, sleep, have fun and perhaps bring up a family, so it needs to be perfect. There are few things more satisfying in life than building your own home, and it also brings a lot of benefits too. This will give you an enormous amount of satisfaction and pride, and once it’s completed you will have an attachment to it that not many people get to feel towards their house. Of course building your home is no simple and straightforward process, and there is an enormous amount of planning, preparation, construction and plenty more to do.

The very beginning stages will involve finding a suitable location and having the blueprint designed, and this can be done with the help of an architect or engineer. You will be able to discuss with them your needs like the number of bedrooms and the layout, and they will then be able to take this information and come up with a suitable design. With the design and location arranged the next stages involve having the property surveyed and the footprint of the house identified, and you will then need to acquire the relevant permits for construction to begin. These permits will include a building permit and possibly a septic tank permit, electrical permit, plumbing permit and a mechanical permit, and this will all depend on local codes and zoning requirements.

Starting the Construction Work
That is all of the preparation taken care of, and now you can move onto the physical work. With the construction there is a large amount where you will probably want to use a trained professional, but there may be a fair amount that you can do yourself as well. A few of the trades that will be involved in the building of a home include site work, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, insulators, painters, flooring installers and heating, ventilation and air conditioning installers amongst a few others.

With the building there will be an enormous amount of machinery and equipment that will be needed, and even if you seek the services of a professional you may need to provide this for them. This will include machinery like excavators and other construction machines, and for large items like this you will need to visit a specialist provider, Scot JCB being an example. The construction process will be a long and no doubt stressful one, but it will also be hugely exciting and satisfying too, and once you are completely finished you will have your brand new home which you designed and built, and there is no feeling in the world quite like this one.

an ebay fairytale

(warning: this post is written in third person. i only warn you because i am still bothered by a speech karl malone (an NBA player for the utah jazz) gave over 14 years ago in which he referred to himself in third person the entire time...)

once upon a time there was a designer who loved pretty things. (yep. that would be me.) often, these pretty things were very, very expensive.
sadly, this designer was on a very tight budget.
however, with some patience, and a knack for finding a bargain, she usually found something pretty for her castle that was also within her budget.

because this designer loved to find high-end items at a fraction of the cost, she often shopped on ebay. one morning, she noticed a lovely chandelier for sale.
this one to be exact (but without the shades):

but instead of the usual $1000 price tag, the bidding on this beauty was starting at just $100.
"oh!" she exclaimed, "i had my eye on a different chandelier for my dining room, but this one is VERY lovely, and if i can get it for a decent price, i will be very happy indeed!"

the days passed, and she watched the auction with interest. she knew that if she REALLY wanted it, she might have to spend a few hundred dollars, but since the item was located in the kingdom where this designer lived, she could save the shipping fee if she drove and picked it up! plus, she had since grown very fond of this chandelier, and knew it would look perfect in her dining room.

the time for the auction to end was coming to a close...the designer watched with intensity on her magical tablet. (ha! you know you all feel that way about your iphones/ipads at times! admit it!)
with only 15 minutes to go, our heroine was still the high bidder, and the beautiful chandelier was still just over $100...

only 9 minutes to go, and her bid was still the highest!

4 minutes to go, and all is well!

oh no! someone else is trying to snag our designers amazing chandelier with just a few seconds left. evil ebay bandits!
(SO typical.)

oh, HARK!!
what is THIS? has our heroine won the auction??
and for only $211.50?
tis so! all is well!
(she can be sneaky when it comes to online auctions, that designer...with a little help from auctionsniper.com)

as soon as the designer was able to, she rushed to the nearby warehouse to pick up her beautiful and affordable prize!
she placed it in her chariot and rode off into the sunset towards her castle.

she unpacked it and oohed and aahed at how pretty and perfect it was!
(and how cheap!)

soon, arrangements were made for the hideous temporary light to be removed, and the new and amazing chandelier to be hung in its place....

and here is the lovely chandelier, hanging proudly in the content and happy designers home:

oh, and just in case you were wondering... the designer lived happily ever after.
(at least i believe she will!)

so, what do you think? do you believe in fairy tales?
have you ever scored an incredible deal on ebay?
do you think i should write a post on how to shop on ebay for designer goods?
let me know!

4 lighting tips that can transform a room

Posted by dasfseegdse Selasa, 20 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
buy what you love

source

think of lighting as the jewelry in your room.
just as the right necklace or earrings can take and outfit from ordinary to stunning, the right lighting can elevate your room and make it feel special. an interesting and beautiful light fixture or lamp can make any space come alive with personality.

source

hard-wired fixtures such as pendants, chandeliers and sconces can be pricey, so be sure and purchase ones that you know you will love for years to come--whether that is a modern, sputnik-type chandelier or a set of vintage brass sconces with intricate scroll-work. if you love it, it will work.

divide the light (types of interior lighting)

lighting is generally categorized as ambient, task or accent lighting. when each of these lighting categories is present, the result is welcoming and well-lit room.

source

ambient, or general lighting provides enough light to function in a space, and is accomplished with ceiling mounted fixtures, or can lighting.

source

task lighting helps you perform a certain task such as reading, preparing or cooking food, writing or grooming. this light is usually provided by smaller, portable desk or floor lamps,  pendants and under cabinet lights.

source

accent lighting is used to draw attention on a piece of art, a texture on a wall, or other architectural feature. these lights tend to quite bright, and are generally track or wall mounted spot lights or picture lights.

if your room feels flat or the you feel the lighting could use some improvement, look around and see if you have all three types of lighting. if not, add the missing component, and your room should feel more balanced and welcoming. all three types of lighting can be purchased at stores like habitat lighting.

hide the cords (make lighting cables invisible)

source

we have all seen those beautiful, glossy spreads in magazines where lamps seem to magically float on glass tables in the middle of rooms, without a cord to seen. most of these miraculous feats are accomplished with photo shop, but you cant photo shop "real life". you can, however, minimize the appearance of unsightly cords. simply take a few minutes to manipulate your cords down the backs or legs of furniture so that they are not as obvious. there are also products on the market that attach to your furniture and keep cords tucked neatly away. cords can then be kept along baseboards and neatly brought up to the outlets.

check your bulbs

source

often, if a space feel sterile or too dark, the simplest solution is often to change your light bulbs. if you have a space that feels dark, try upping the wattage of the bulbs in your light fixtures, or switching to a more energy efficient form of light such as fluorescent or LED, which tend to feel brighter than most incandescent bulbs. if your space suffers from "hospital syndrome"-where the lighting feels bright and flat and has a cool cast to it, consider switching to a bulb that promises a warmer output of light.

source

going with a 3 way bulb can be a great option in a bedroom or media room, where at times you want a small output of light, and at other times you need the light to be brighter.
