leap of faith

Posted by dasfseegdse Senin, 09 Desember 2013 0 komentar
i am finally getting around to posting about my front door....(FINALLY!)and despite all of the very enthusiastic votes for "stuart gold", i opted for "leap of faith."

i know, i know!
don't get mad at me! i absolutely love it when you all take time to give me your opinions, and i value them very much! i actually loved the way stuart gold looked, but i liked the depth or leap of faith just a bit more. it was a bit darker and moodier, and i am THRILLED with the way it looks.

the door was actually painted before we left on our trip, and i have been dying to show you, but i was waiting until we had the door hardware on. things kept coming up to delay the installation, (snow, we didn't have the right tools on hand, a piece of the door knob was missing in action, and (of course) football. i mean, who wants to install a door knob when there is an exciting football game to watch? answer? not my husband.)

i took these pictures with my phone the morning we left on our thanksgiving trip (more on that later!), and it is a good thing i did! there was a snow storm while we were gone, and we have been hit with another storm since we got home---there is now close to 18" of snow in our yard! i haven't wanted to brave standing in the snow in order to get some better pictures.

after 6 months of having a temporary knob on the front door, i am so happy to finally have the "real" front door handle set installed.

thanks again for your patience! i can't wait to show y'all some highlights of our trip, and i have a fun and easy christmas project to share as well. my posting has been a little sparse, i know--the whole computer situation is now partially resolved with my new laptop, but of course then we ran into another issue when we got home--our internet was ssss----l---oooo--w. like, REALLY slow!  because of the location of our house, our options for internet are limited. we decided to go with a company that requires a dish on the side of the house, which is great, UNTIL you have a snow storm...or snow gets in the dish---and then the speed of the  connection slows tremendously. UGH. i wanted to write a post the day we got home (last thursday), but it was taking a full minute or two to open a page. i think things are finally back to normal! lets just hope that we don't get another snow storm!

Housekeeping for Those Who Hate Cleaning

Not everybody enjoys cleaning. In fact, no matter how much they might pride themselves on interior design, some people simply can't stand the routine of housekeeping. Sure, cleaning can be a boring, tiresome and mind-numbing task. But do you know what's even worse than cleaning? Stressing out at the fact that your house looks like a dump. So, despite the fact that every inch of you might detest the notion of picking up a scrubbing brush or a cloth, cleaning is one of life's unavoidable activities. So why not at least make things easy for yourself with these top tips.

Effective Storage

One of the best ways to avoid clutter and keep your home in order is to utilise effective storage. Most people's houses, no matter how organised and well designed, will always gather a host of random objects which don't seem to have a designated home. Where can you put all of these various possessions? Fortunately there are many options. Drawers or storage boxes are a great start. We're not talking about cheap and ugly plastic boxes here; there are countless designs available to suit the décor of your home. Or if you don't like the idea of taking up extra space, storage beds such as the ones available from Metal Beds Ltd are an even better solution.

Make Cleaning Fun

Cleaning doesn't need to be an arduous task. We often build it up in our heads as such, but there are plenty of ways to make it a relaxing and even enjoyable experience. Perhaps you've got a big stack of dishes to do? Or maybe the whole house needs a good vacuum? Well there's no reason why you can't get on with these task whilst enjoying a nice glass of red, even with some music in the background to get you going. Provided you do actually get the work done, it's almost like a reward in advance for keeping on top of the chores.

Set A Timer

The biggest setback that you're going to encounter whilst cleaning is your own negative attitude towards it. If you really don't like cleaning, the chances are you are going to stall the process, become easily distracted, and generally draw out the experience through your unwillingness to simply get the job done. Easy solution: Set a timer. Give yourself an allocated timeframe to complete all the jobs, clean like mad, then relax into the rest of your day.

Simple Solutions that Work

Doing the chores doesn't need to be a chore. By implementing some of the simple ideas listed here, you can get the cleaning done in no time, and maybe even start to enjoy the process as well.

3 T's

Posted by dasfseegdse Senin, 02 Desember 2013 0 komentar
sorry for the break in blogging for the last little while.
i have had a few "good" excuses--all of which just so happen to start with "T".

the first is Technology.
you see, for the last year or so, my laptop has had a "full start-up disc". translation? the hard drive is full, which makes downloading pictures or running certain programs a little "tricky". and by tricky, i mean that in order to make room, i have been deleting apps, photos, and anything else that will let me squeeze out any extra space. i have been using our desk top to download pictures, and then i load them onto my blog and do most of my blogging and design work from my laptop. it's not ideal, but this system has worked for me for the last year. well, until about 2 weeks ago, when i walked into my office  and saw this:

long story short?
a fried hard drive. NOT good.
i will spare you the details, but in order to get our pictures off this hard drive (because we don't have a back up of most of them), it will cost about a thousand dollars, and may not even be possible. i am sick even thinking about it. for real. lets change the subject before i start to cry.

anyway, there is SOME good news. i bought a new laptop.

so, i should be able to resume blogging on a somewhat normal schedule.

my next excuses?
why, Travel and Thanksgiving, of course!
we decided this year to come "back home" to the southeast to visit family at thanksgiving. we left a few days before thanksgiving, and will be back in utah on wednesday. we flew into nashville and spent the night there, before heading to alabama to see family and spend thanksgiving.
here are a few pictures from our adventure so far:

this may be the largest and most confusing hotel in the world to get into.
we drove around for like 10 minutes to find the lobby.
but, it is pretty spectacular once you are inside!

did you know that there is a full size replica of the parthenon in nashville? it was built for an exposition in the 1890's and is open to the public.

since our family in alabama live near huntsville, we decided to stop by the us space and rocket center.

even though we have driven past it about 284 times, we finally made time to check it out!
(isn't that the way life is? you never seem to get to those "touristy" things in your own back yard until you move away!)

they had an amazing exhibit on da vinci, which the entire family loved.

after lots of smiles and visits with family and a great meal on thanksgiving day, we drove to seabrook island, south carolina and met up with my parents.

we will be here until tuesday, when we will drive back to nashville and make a very brief stop in knoxville (our old stomping grounds) to see some more family.

until then, i am going to soak up the view, relax, and get ready to do some sight seeing today in charleston.

i will be posting some more pictures of trip highlights later in the week, and i hope to finally share my front door with you. if you follow me on instagram, then you know what paint color i picked. we installed the door hardware at 9pm the night before we went out of town, so one of my first priorities when i get back is to take some pictures and show y'all!

Let There Be Light: A No Nonsense Guide to Kitchen Lighting (a guest post)

Posted by dasfseegdse Rabu, 20 November 2013 0 komentar
Lighting these days is an art form. Sure it is there to serve a functional purpose as well. But more and more people are beginning to realise the aesthetic impact they can make on their kitchens through a basic knowledge of lighting techniques. With the application of just a few simple rules, you and your friends can totally transform the look, feel, texture and mood of your home.

Keep it Natural

Of course, there is no substitute for the real thing. And natural light should without doubt be the foundation from which you create your kitchen lighting scheme. To really make the most of it, you will most likely have to cheat a bit. This could mean installing roof lights or patio doors that fold out to allow more light in. You may even want to consider trimming any plants which hinder the flow of light into the kitchen.

Ambient for Atmosphere

Having a central hanging pendant light or row of lights in your kitchen and over the dining table will provide a decent amount of illumination and will serve as an attractive focal feature. Be sure to install lights which are dimmable. This will allow you to control the mood depending on the occasion. Also, be aware that ambient light alone will probably not suffice, and that thoughtful and practical task lighting will be necessary to really give purpose and depth to your kitchen lighting scheme.

Be Smart with Task Lighting

The kitchen can be a busy place and there are plenty of opportunities for aesthetically pleasing and functional task lights. You will definitely want to install some task lighting over the cooker and over the food preparation surfaces. A row of spotlights will allow you to see easily into your pans as you prepare dinner. And if you take your culinary pursuits seriously, you may even like to place some lighting inside some of the dry food storage units, in order to make your ingredients that tiny bit more accessible.

A Flourish of Features

This is where kitchen lighting really becomes a visual art form. Feature lighting involves working with the architecture of your kitchen in order to organically interweave beautiful lighting installations into the natural structure of your home. The results can be breathtaking, but you will almost definitely need to seek professional specialist lighting advice.

Changes You'll Notice

The above techniques are by no means complex or beyond the grasp of anyone with a little will and perseverance. And if all these changes sound like they'll cost you a lot of money, they won't. In fact,  you can get good quality kitchen lights from BrightLightz for next to nothing.

DIY Master-class – Essential Tools (a guest post)

Posted by dasfseegdse Sabtu, 16 November 2013 0 komentar
Interior design isn’t all window treatments and wall coverings. Choosing the right colours and textures for your room is extremely important, but the skill to carry out your designs is vital, especially if you don’t have the money to hire a professional. The array of tools and equipment in the average hardware store is overwhelming but with a little background information you can make sure you have the right kit for any design job.

The Mitre Saw – For furniture making projects, shelf installation and anything else where you need accurate straight line cutting in large volumes, a mitre saw is your best friend. Automatic saws are faster and far more accurate than the manual version; blades are less likely to flex and bend, and you don’t have the problem of changing pressure and angle as your arm gets tired. A mitre saw is probably the most expensive tool in the DIY tool kit, but it is well worth the investment. Make sure you do go for a quality tool such as this Dewalt, available online at Elcocks – this is not the area to economize.

The Electric Drill – It goes without saying that an electric drill is superior to a manual one, but not all drills are made equal. Small, lightweight drills are great for craft working, but for serious DIY projects you need a decent quality drill. Opt for one that comes with a full range of drill bits, and if possible one that doubles as an electric screwdriver. Make sure you don’t buy one without checking the weight; if it is too heavy for you to hold up then it is useless to you. If it takes two hand, you don’t want to buy it – you need a hand spare for steadying and holding. In the case of a drill, it is the quality of the drill bits themselves where you don’t want to economise; you can afford to pay a little less for the drill itself.

The Jigsaw– The fact is, sawing is not always about the straight line, especially when it comes to interior design as opposed to simple DIY. The ability to cut wood and plastic into specific shapes can transform a simple piece of furniture into a style statement. Because it is such a popular tool (and often used by people in place of a mitre saw, though this is not recommendable if you want a truly accurate straight edge) choosing one of good quality requires a more detailed guide. That said, it is an essential tool for anyone serious about DIY.

sneaky shallow storage

Posted by dasfseegdse Rabu, 13 November 2013 0 komentar
no matter how big or small your home is, clever, functional storage is always appreciated.
in our house, i took full advantage of the space behind the doors of the master bedroom closets:

in my husbands closet, we used the space to store his ties!
it is amazing how many ties can be stored in a space that is normally "lost".

this solution literally only takes 3" of projected space from the wall. you could also use this space to install hooks for coats, robes or belts.

for this project, we used the most inexpensive walmart towel bar we could find.

we did the same thing behind the door of my closet---
(but used a different rod--sorry for the lame pictures here.
the above pictures were taken by a pro...these were taken by me.)

and in my youngest daughters walk in closet!

we finally installed the closets in my kids rooms this past weekend.  my kids have never been so happy to hang their clothes up! it's pretty amazing how having the right kind of storage can make life SO much tidier and easier. it was a happy, happy weekend at the clemon's house!
