choosing paint for grady's bathroom

Posted by dasfseegdse Selasa, 23 Juli 2013 0 komentar
gradys bath WILL be painted by the end of the week.
(at least, i hope so...)
i want a warm gray that adds some depth to the wall, but i don't want it to be too dark, because the room doesn't get any natural light.

last week, the second pendant over the toilet was installed. more progress! (because of a code that doesn't allow a hanging fixture to be within 3 feet of a shower/tub we didn't install it before we moved in.) it definitely helps with the amount of light in here. to UP the light a bit more, i have since swapped out the 60 watt incandescent bulbs for 75 watt warm fluorescent ones. (by the way, am i the only one who HATES the "cool" or "daylight" fluorescent bulbs? ugh! i think they are awful. remind me of being inside a 7-11.)

i also replaced the flush mount light with a simple 3-light spot light, which made a HUGE difference! i actually love this flush mount light, and will repurpose it somewhere else in the house...

the new light:
found for $5.99 at ikea...and that included the three bulbs! how could i resist?

but anyway, i am getting a little sidetracked, aren't i?
we were talking about paint...
ok, so the plan is to get a paint color that adds some subtle color, and supports the masculine feel of the room.
here are the colors i sampled on his wall:
this is the wall above the vanity:
all colors are benjamin moore: cumulus cloud, stonington gray, la paloma gray, cumulus cloud @50%, seattle mist, balboa mist.

this is the wall opposite the vanity. as you can see, it seems a little darker:

for comparison, here is that same wall, after i replaced the flush mount ceiling fixture with the ikea spot light:

my favorites are balboa mist, cumulus cloud and cumulus cloud at 50%. i also really like stonington gray, but i like the warmth of the others just a tad more.

before i swapped out the ceiling light and changed the bulbs in the pendants, i was definitely leaning towards "cumulus cloud at 50%", but with the added light, i think the room can handle the slightly darker "cumulus cloud".

what do you think? which paint is your pick?

the punch list: (what is still getting done around here - june/july)

Posted by dasfseegdse Senin, 22 Juli 2013 0 komentar
things are gettin' done!
maybe not as fast as i want them to, but they are definitely getting DONE.
here are a few things that have happened in the last few weeks:

first off---we finally got our range! yee-haw! i was without one for about 6 weeks, and so when we finally bought one, it was like christmas!

if you follow me on instagram, then you have already had a look at my range.

allen managed to get it installed the day before fathers day...coincidence? or did someone want to make sure he had some good stuff to eat on his special day? hmmm....
(i plan on writing a review of it soon, but i wanted to test it out and make sure it wasnt just pretty to look at!)

our door hardware arrived and we (and by "we" i mean my husband, allen) installed all of the interior knobs. we still need to install the exterior door hardware.
(by the way, how GREAT is it to have a handy husband? i love that my man can do just about anything around the house. he hasn't had to do much the last 5 years that we have been renting, but he has been doing a crazy amount of stuff in the last few months! thanks sweetie!)

i seriously cant tell you how "grown-up" and fancy i feel having REAL door knobs!
(the eye-holes were getting old. yes, they were.)

i am REALLY happy with the ones we chose.  you can read more about the knobs we selected here.

we installed our irrigation system.
yes, you DID just hear me *yawn.
i have a client who just built a home down the road from me, and when we get together, we always commiserate on how much it costs to put in a yard---and how much we would rather be spending that  money on some pretty window treatments or a table.

in the front yard, we put the pipes in first, and then had the topsoil brought in to cover them.  i guess most people bring the topsoil in and then have to dig trenches to lay the irrigation pipe. this doesn't seem very interesting to me, but my husband thinks it is a----mazing, and so does every male that he talks to about this. (*yawn)

more exciting that irrigation, but also not a punch list item (more like a bucket list item)
i found myself a fiddle fig tree! it took about 7 phone calls and 2 months, but i GOT one.

this one is a "column" variety...it is a little more bush-like than a typical tree. i love it!
i found it at the J + J garden center in layton in case any of you locals are interested. call first and make sure they have some because they go through them fast!

my new tree loves her new home and promises not to die. yep. she told me so...
(i cant wait to add some built-ins, trim and a fireplace to the living room. it will be a while....but i can wait.)

our new (slightly controversial) front porch lights got installed:

and, we now have a door bell! which we can upgrade later...(this one is pretty boring, but it is better than having wires sticking out the wall!)

yes, the house is really dirty from the soil being brought in, but once the sod is in, we will pressure wash the house.

this weekend, we got the final grading done in the yard, and the mulch for the front beds is in.

it makes such a difference in the way things look! we were supposed to get our sod delivered, but there was a problem, and we will have to wait. it will be nice to see some green around the house!

thanks for following along!

grady's bathroom-the new design plan

Posted by dasfseegdse Kamis, 18 Juli 2013 0 komentar
ok.
hang on to your wigs.
i might actually be finishing a room in my new house in the next few weeks!

after 5 years of renting, i feel a little bit like rocky balboa when he climbed up the steps of the museum of art in philly! can you hear "the eye of the tiger" playing softly in your head right now?
i hope so! (becuase i can!)

as i mentioned earlier, the first spaces i will be working on in my house will be the bathrooms. i am going to start with my sons bathroom, which is upstairs, near the bonus room:

while the house was under construction, and i was selecting the tile, vanity, plumbing fixtures and lighting for the bathroom, i came up with this design plan:

now that the "hard" decisions are made, i need to move onto phase 2: the decorative stuff---art/shower curtains/mirror, etc. this bathroom has a simple, masculine feel to it, and i want to inject a little fun with the accessories and art. it needs to function as the "main" bath for guests who are hanging out in the bonus room, but my little man will be the one using it everyday.

i originally wanted to do a screen printed shower curtain, something like this:

however, i also wanted the shower curtain to be open, so i could see the tile work in the bath surround, and ultimately decided that i wanted two panels, so any detail in a "cool" screen printed panel would be lost if it was gathered on the side of the shower.

when i was at home goods a couple of weeks ago, i found a pair of grommet top curtains for $25 that look almost identical to these ikat grommet top curtains from west elm:

i decided that they would make a great addition to the bathroom....they will add subtle pattern and some softness, but still have a masculine look that my son will appreciate.

i want to hang a buffalo print that i have had for a while. (i still love the "tree" print that i have on the first board, but think i will hang that in grady's bedroom instead) i like the graphic feel of the buffalo print, and think the orientation (landscape versus portrait) will work better here.

here is the revised design plan:

still to do:
hanging the other pendant (this just got done last week! (can i get a "CHECK!?")
paint decisions
hardware (towel ring, toilet paper holder)
finding a mirror
hanging/buying the shower curtain rod
final art decisions
buying some baskets for under the vanity

stay tuned! i WILL have this bathroom done by the end of july!
i just need to keep channeling my inner rocky balboa....

brass hardware at ikea + other goodies

Posted by dasfseegdse Selasa, 16 Juli 2013 0 komentar
last week, i had a day where i only had ONE of my three kids at home. this never ever seems to happen to me. especially not smack-dab in the middle of summer. i clearly needed to take advantage of this phenomenon!

i thought it would be the perfect opportunity to run to ikea! i had a few things i wanted to check out, and a few things i "needed" to buy. my 9 year old son needed some *ahem* convincing, so i promised him $1 for every place that we stopped...as long as he didn't complain.  i know, i know. BRILLIANT.
( feel free to borrow this amazing mothering technique. just note that it works much better when you only have one kid with you...and you only have a few places to go!)

anyway, onto my adventures at ikea....
i was happy to see that ikea now has some darling brushed brass hardware!
totally cute, and totally affordable!

great little lamp. almost bought one, but stopped myself. i may get one next time i return.

i desperately need some storage in my mini office.
i think i might call on BILLY to help me out.
i love the combo of open and closed storage on these...

i really loved this print. it was out of stock in the art section, but i couldn't get it out of my head.
i might just order it online. or look for something similar on etsy.

i actually bought this little table. i use my computer a lot in bed, and figured this functional little table would be a better place to rest my laptop than the floor.
it looks just like the ones i have seen from crate and barrel and west elm, but it is only $25!
(dont you love how my son cant sit still long enough for me to take a picture?)

considering this console table for my bonus room. i really need to focus on ONE space at a time, but i keep getting distracted!
i feel a lot like doug the dog in "UP".
"squirrel!!!"

anyway, where was i?
ah, yes. ikea.
shelving.
the lack wall shelf is now available in some fun new colors and sizes!
these are a great, affordable alternative to the west elm wall shelves.

looking for a great, sturdy simple little table? you cant go wrong with something like this.

i am TOTALLY in love with these new desk legs! the shape is so cute and feminine. i am already dreaming up a way to use these in my daughter charlottes room redo! (yep. getting distracted again.)

i am considering this daybed for charlottes room. (clearly, i have a problem staying focused. just as my son has a problem staying still for more than 2 seconds.) i have a few ideas on how to transform it...but still wondering if i should try to make something from scratch, or start with an affordable base like this...
decisions, decisions!

arent these parisian bistro-esque woven chairs great? i always love it when ikea throws in a few items with natural elements like rattan. they can add so much softness and texture to any space!

the newish tarva dresser is made from solid wood, and the sizes are much better than the rast dresser---ikeas other all wood dresser. (so much easier to hack when a piece is made from real wood!)

we still dont have our closets installed. it is kinda killing me. (i like to organize and love it when everything has a place. kinda hard to put things away in an empty closet.)
i am trying to come up with a way to get that "custom-built-in/high-end" closet look without spending a fortune. i think these malm dressers may play a part in that.

i DID purchase a pair of werna panels in navy for my bonus room:
as well as the stave mirror in white for charlottes closet:

but, i promised myself that i was  going to stay a bit more focused, and try to work on ONE room at a time until it is done. oooohhh! it is so hard though! "SQUIRREL!!" ha! ha!

anyway, it was a good day. grady managed to sit still long enough while eating for me to get a non-blurry picture of him, AND, at the end of the day, he made $5. (and i didnt have to listen to any complaining! worth. every. penny.)

i like big lights and i cannot lie...

Posted by dasfseegdse Senin, 15 Juli 2013 0 komentar
oh my! so sorry for that lame post title.
i just couldn't resist!
(i pretty much love all 80's music, as i suspect anyone growing up in the 70's and 80's can relate!)

if you remember from this post, i purchased the stockholm sconces from restoration hardware for the front of my house.

i ordered them in january, but they didn't arrive until a few weeks ago. in the meantime, i had these $5 beauties hanging as place holders: (what light wouldn't look huge next to these??)

when they (finally) arrived, they were in a HUGE box. of course, i had looked over the measurements when i originally ordered them, and so i knew they were "on the large side", but i still was NOT prepared for how large they really were!
we took them out of the box, and i had my husband hold them up against the front of the house while i walked across the street to get an idea of the scale.
we both started laughing.
...and joking that maybe we should have built a castle to house these behemoth light fixtures!

oh! but i really loved them anyway! i mean,  really, REALLY loved them---the unique shape, the weathered zinc finish, and the fact that they are a little large. i always like to say "go big or go home!" hanging these light fixtures would definitely be going BIG!
i went back and forth for the last several weeks, and i swear that i changed my mind every day about whether to keep them or sell them. i finally decided to keep them.

here is a picture of my two daughters, standing on the front porch with one of the lights.

here are some of the factors that helped me to ultimately decide to keep and install the lights:

1. yes. they are BIG. but because my house sits a good 6' above the elevation of the sidewalk, and since there is a large retaining wall in front, they don't look as large as they might on a house with a flat yard.

2. i had already purchased the semi flush mount RH light (also in weathered zinc), and i knew that if i bought another light fixture, the finishes would not match. not a huge deal, but i really like the soft black/uneven finish of the "weathered zinc".

3. we currently do not have any landscaping, so right now, the ONLY thing to look at is these lights. i figured that once some trees, bushes, and other architectural elements (like shutters and window boxes) were added, there would be a lot to "soften" the house.

4. i figured that if i sold these lights, i would be able to get about what i paid for them ($159 plus shipping), but i also knew that every other exterior light that i really liked was double or triple the price of these. that would mean more money than i wanted to spend. a lot more. plus, there are about 457 other projects in the house that need some attention!

here they are, getting installed:

and here they are, in all their large glory!
quite honestly, when they first went up, i was thinking they were too big, and that i was going to take them down. but after a minute, i got used to them,  and now i love them!

**my husband and i are still "debating" about whether they are too big. he thinks they are, and i say they are FINE.
what do you think? i promise i wont get upset if a majority of you think they are too big, and i need to get some smaller lights...i am just curious to know your opinions!
please leave a comment!
too big?
or just fine?
(thanks in advance!)
