framing odd size art

Posted by dasfseegdse Rabu, 11 September 2013 0 komentar
i love the simple, great looking frames that are available at stores like west elm, pottery barn, ikea, target and michaels. most of these frames come with mats that are cut to fit standard size prints. but what if you have a piece of art/print/object that doesn't fit the norm?
here are a few ideas to help you solve that dilemma:

custom framing

custom framing can cost a small fortune but is worth the occasional splurge.

custom mats

even though i am a big believer in custom framing, there are MANY times when the money in my budget or clients budget needs to be spent elsewhere.
one of my favorite tricks is to use an inexpensive, store bought frame (ikea ribba frames are a favorite of mine!), and have a mat custom cut to fit my art.

no mat

one very simple solution is to place the art work directly on a piece of canson paper (available in the art section of any craft paper) or mat board. this works best when there is minimal contrast between the art and the background.

trim to fit your frame

have a inexpensive poster or print that doesn't fit any frame? consider cutting it! the trimmed piece will seem transformed with its new shape that you will most likely just find more appealing that the original! (can you tell i have bison on the brain? the print in the background here is the same one is used in grady's bathroom.)

floating glass

floating your art between two pieces of glass helps the eye to focus on the art, and any uneven space between the art and the edge of the frame becomes less obvious. this is a budget friendly option, as it requires no mat or paper to mount the art on.

do you have another way to inexpensively frame art? leave a comment--i would love to hear!

construction progress weeks 13 + 14

here is what has been happening at house #6 the last 2 weeks:
there are two pocket doors in the house, and both frames were installed. (can you see the metal parts in the door opening of the mini office?  i know they are a little hard to see...)

the MAIN thing that has been happening is dry wall!

besides the framing, nothing makes a bigger difference in a house under construction more than dry wall. this is when you can really get a sense of the size, shape and feel of each room.

here is a peek at a little special project in the master bedroom that i will be sharing more about later.

dry wall can be hung in cold weather, but in order to finish it, the house needs to have heat.
YES!
HEAT!
the heat was turned on in the house, which has completely changed the way the house feels...LITERALLY. it really feels like a HOUSE. we aren't all bundled up shivering as we walk though it. we can linger and talk and look out the windows, and really feel what it will be like to LIVE there. it's really exciting!

after the dry wall is hung, the corner bead is installed. then, a paper tape is laid over the seams and then mud is troweled on in thin sheets, and finally sanded smooth.
most new houses in the west have rounded corner bead, and textured ceilings, but we opted for square corner bead and smooth ceilings.

a look at the stairs over the last 10 days:

pre dry wall.

after the dry wall is up.

dry wall taped, mudded and partially sanded.

the last two weeks were also filled with meetings with the cabinet fabricator to layout the cabinet plans, trying to finalize carpet, selecting a color for the exterior of the house, a stain color for the front and back doors, and narrowing down choices for tile. it has been fun and exhausting!

framing tip: staggering studs for soundproofing

Posted by dasfseegdse 0 komentar
i meant to share this post earlier, but i have been crazy busy trying to select everything for the house. (more on that this week and next)

one little framing trick that we have used in the past, that helps to control noise in areas where sound transfers can be a problem is to stagger the studs.
staggered stud walls are an effective way to prevent sound from traveling from room to room. in a regular stud wall, sound waves hit one side of the drywall, travel through the stud and into the drywall on the other side. since the stud connects the two sheets of drywall, the sound has a path to travel through. the trick is to separate both sides of the wall. that way, the sound won't be able to travel through the wall as easily.
we opted to stagger the studs in between the master bedroom and the entry:

as you can see, the master bedroom backs up to the entry and great room. we wanted to make sure that the bedroom will remain a quiet sanctuary, even if people are talking or watching tv in the great room.
(*edited:)
there are twice as many studs in the wall now, so all codes are met, and insulation was also added to this wall to maximize the soundproofing.

this is an especially effective way to reduce noise between a home theater and the rest of the house, as well bedrooms that back up to living spaces, or a home office.

construction progress: week 11 + 12

thank you for all the comments on the door post!
it was so helpful!
i personally LOVE the 3 panel (yay! i see that most of you also voted for this option!), and my husband likes the 5 panel...and honestly, i think they both look pretty great. but after a brief meeting with the door supplier this morning, we learned that the door we wanted (the 3 panel) wasn't available in the option we wanted, and the cost to upgrade to the 3 panel door was going to cost around 2k...so we decided to go with the 5 panel doors.

anyway, the last two weeks have brought a lot of changes to our new house. we were hit with a pretty massive snowstorm, which changed the schedule of a few items on the exterior of the house, but things have been steadily happening on the interior of the house despite the piles of snow and freezing temperatures.
for starters, the roof felt and shingles were installed, and the windows went in.

 the electricians wired the house.

 the insulation was installed.

the heating and air system and duct work were put in.

all while this was laying on the ground!

the moister barrier was put up....we are still waiting for the framer to finish a few last details, and then the rest of it can go up. due to some framing changes, one window didn't fit, and had to be reordered. it should arrive this week.

i spent the better part of my saturday at the house, cleaning, while my husband was taking care of a few little framing details (more on that later!) it was SO cold! i seriously looked like a crazy person...i was all bundled up, and was wearing a scarf around my neck, a hat, AND a scarf around my hat, two pairs of socks, gloves, a coat, and tons of layers and i was still chilly!
within an hour after we left the house, my face and arms started to itch. at first i thought it was the blood coming back to my skin after being FROZEN, but then it started to turn red and REALLY itch. my husband told me it was insulation fibers that were being kicked up from my sweeping. he gave me some GREAT advice on how to get insulation fibers out of your skin:
DO not rub or scratch! (that will just cause the fibers to work deeper into your skin.) instead, get some duct tape or strapping tape and stick it on your skin. rub slightly, and then remove. repeat 3-6 times (making sure to get a new section of tape each time) over each affected area. it worked like a charm!

more excitement---- the sheet rock was stocked in the house, and the installers started hanging!
this week is going to exciting! the sheet rock will be going up, and the gas line will get installed
which means the house will have heat!

construction progress: weeks 8-10

first of all, let me aplogize for the long delay since my last post. i usually slow down on the blogging and design work during the holidays, but this year, just as i was gearing back up, my son came down with the flu...and then by the next day the rest of us were sick as well. r-e-a-l-l-y sick. (and in addition to all of us getting the flu, we also got to deal with a bout of the stomach flu, a case of bronchitis and a sinus infection! BLECH.) honestly, the last 7 days have been a nightmare. after what my family and i have experienced over the last week, i will definitely be getting us all a flu shot next year! i seriously feel so blessed that we are all on the mend...and also really grateful for tamiflu and antibiotics!

anyway, the house is coming along. things sloweded down a bit because of christmas and new years, but all in all, things are rolling right along!
here is what has been going on:

the framers worked more on the rafters.

isn't this a great shot? this was taken at sunset when the rafters on the main part of the house were going up. it was so magical to finally stand upstairs and see the view through our future windows! the two larger windows on the left belong to my older daughters room, the small square window will be where the bathroom will be, and the windows on the right will be in my sons room.
more rafters were installed.

once the rafters were in place, they started installing the sheathing for the roof.

then they finally started on the area over the garage.
here is a back/side view of the house. the area over the garage will be a bonus room for the kids to play and a possible future office or bunk room.

once the roof was mostly complete over the main part of the house,  the framers started working on the inteior walls of the second floor....

...as well as the ceilings.

on the weekends, my husband was working on building the massive retaining wall in the back yard.
about halfway through the month, the weather finally became too rough to work in. he is going to come back to the retaining wall once the snow melts a bit.

when it wasn't snowy, it was  muddy...

more walls went up on the upper floor.

ted, our framer, measuring the height of some pony walls in the bonus room.

the framing for the dormer in the bonus room starts to take shape.

it is so exciting to look up the stairs and see walls!

and finally, the roof is almost complete, and the entire second floor is framed!

just for fun---here is a peek at the rest of our month:
(you have probably seen most of these if you follow me (autumnclemons) on instagram)

my daughter olivia spotted her favorite author, brandon mull in the food court at city creek. we stalked him and asked to get his picture with her. if you haven't read his fablehaven series yet, you should! i loved them just as much as i liked the harry potter books! great stuff....

christmas booty. my husband is the best!
i am loving my new iPhone 5! the camera is awesome.

a visit to see the lights downtown and do a little shopping....

loved it. we also saw les miserables, and i loved it as well. but honestly, i am a total nerd about the lord of the rings, so i have to say i liked the hobbit more!

thanks for your patience! the selection process has been kicked into HIGH gear, and so i have a lot of posts coming up about what i am doing in the house!
