before + after: the power of an hour-family room

Posted by dasfseegdse Selasa, 18 Desember 2012 0 komentar
this client needed help with her family room, and opted for my pinterest board + phone consultation service. (you may be able to tell from the after pictures that this is the same client that i helped with this foyer consultation.)

before:
she wanted the room to feel more cohesive, and welcoming.

the red chair was on it's way out, and she wanted suggestions for a replacement.
she loved red, but wanted to see it in smaller, more sophisticated doses in the room.

what we discussed during our phone call:
* my client had already ordered a pair of chairs from restoration hardware. we discussed placing a small metal table in between them, as well as a gallery wall above.
*adding some simple roman shades to the windows near the chairs to coordinate with the existing linen panels on the opposite wall.
*replacing the table with something with a lightly more rustic feel to add some texture to the room.
*layering a cowhide rug on a patterned natural fiber rug to boost the cozy feel.
*adding two ottomans to the end of the table for additional seating.
*replacing the red chair with a more neutral one, and adding some pillows with slight touches of red.
*adding a more simple lamp.

after:
my favorite element in the newly restyled space is the combination of the two rugs, new table and the pair of ceramic stools. i love how all of the textures work together to add some personality and coziness to the room.

as you can see, the new tables, with the lighter wood and touches of  metal add texture to the room and contrast with the leather sofa.

the new chairs, metal side table and personalized gallery wall help make this area cozy and inviting.

interesting in working together to create a more beautiful and functional space?

before + after--the power of an hour: southern family room

another pinterest board + phone consultation success story!

before:
staying in the room were:
the two leather sofas, the new chairs from overstock, the woods side table,  the ottoman and rug.

my client felt that the room lacked personality and she wanted to add some subtle color. the current drapes were actually patterned drapes that she had tired of, and so she hung them inside out. she wanted some quick updates that would freshen up the room, and also wanted my help picking out a new paint color.

here is what we discussed on the phone:
*changing the wall color to something less gold, yet still neutral.
*adding some touches of metal with a side table, new lamp, and other accessories
*moving the chairs in front of the window to give the illusion of more space
*adding a large mirror and antlers (her husband is a hunter)over the mantle to take advantage
   of the high ceiling.
*bringing in some color and pattern in pillows
*replacing the drapes with something simple and affordable
*recovering the ottoman and adding a pleat to the slipcover for some fun detail
*adding a more graphic picture gallery to the wall near the kitchen
*restyling the bookcases to add more decorative objects

after:

the biggest change is the wall color. we opted for benjamin moore's "stone hearth". it is a great neutral...less gold yet still warm enough to tie in the other elements of the home like the fireplace surround and the kitchen cabinets.

adding the large mirror and antlers the wall space above the fireplace gives the wall so much more presence. the pillows add some color and texture.

new drapes, and a new table (the alu accent table from z gallerie--one of my favorites) make the room feel more polished.

can you spot the pleating detail in the edge of the slipcover ottoman?

the new photo gallery takes advantage of the wall space better than the single frame that was there before.

the power of an hour: modern nursery for a baby boy

Posted by dasfseegdse Kamis, 07 Juni 2012 0 komentar
i wanted to share another success story from a client who opted for my one hour phone call + pinterest board design service. i had worked with this client once before, on a full room design, so i had a pretty good idea of her particular taste. she loves color and likes a slightly off-beat, modern touch in her spaces. i was really excited when she asked for my help to design the nursery of her soon-to-be born baby boy #4!

before:
as you can see, the room was very beige...

what we were working with:
my client already had a very comfy rocker that she wanted to keep, and needed to keep her existing crib. she also wanted to re-use the large fabric wall hanging, didn't want to replace the ceiling fan, and had recently scored a great looking mid-century dresser that she was hoping to incorporate into the nursery.

what we discussed:
* my client was in love with a polka dot fabric that had some really great colors, so we used as as inspiration and talked about pulling out colors that were unexpected and still masculine. we opted for green and orange.
*changing the wall color to something a little more crisp and fresh, and coordinated with the polka dot fabric, but didn't necessarily match. we opted for a soft, fresh blue.
* bringing some curtain panels up to the ceiling to not only soften the wall, but also to block out the sun while the little one napped.
*painting the dresser that my client found on craigslist a nice white to give it a more modern feel.
*adding a patterned fabric and contrast trim to some ready-made curtain panels to maximize budget and add an impact.
*adding a fun spoonflower fabric for a punch of color and pattern on a pillow.
*recovering a lamp shade in a map for a touch of whimsy.
*adding a new metal table.

 after:

my client did a fantastic job transforming this lamp and lampshade!

one of the really great ideas we discussed during our phone call was how to effectively use the dresser as a changing table. we decided to create a box made from wood, and cover it in our inspiration fabric...and then place the changing pad on top of the box. it worked like a charm! the changing pad is at the perfect height, and in a year or two, the box can be removed and the dresser can be used just like a normal dresser.

i really love how the orange animal fabric pairs so nicely with the polka dot and green chevron fabrics.

i get so excited to get pictures like this in my inbox! my client did a great job of taking these pictures...and even though my portfolio as a designer may not be filled with amazing, polished, professionally staged pictures, i take a lot of pride in knowing that my clients have the confidence to tackle their rooms on their own after just an hour of professional guidance.

do you have a room that needs some simple updates? have questions about a space and
are not sure what to do? need advice on color? fabrics? floor plan layout?
contact me and schedule a time for us to chat!

i am currently accepting clients for full room designs
for august and september, but i can fit a phone consultation or a

pinterest board + phone consultation ANY time!
